ABOUT

As a permanent member of Moop Mama and the Glenn Miller Orchestra under Wil Salden, Marvin Frey performs at festivals and on international concert stages. He has played with the WDR Big Band and the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, as well as artists including Joshua Redman, The Temptations and The Four Tops.

With his own band, the Marvin Frey Group, he focuses on original compositions and arrangements. In 2020, he released his debut album Status Quo. He also performs in a duo with pianist Jerry Lu.

His musical education took him from the Landesmusikgymnasium Rheinland-Pfalz to Conservatorium Maastricht, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in jazz trumpet, cum laude, followed by a master’s degree at Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. His time with the BundesJazzOrchester and his studies with Malte Burba were also formative. His artistic development was supported by scholarships from Zukunftsinitiative Rheinland-Pfalz and the Werner Richard – Dr. Carl Dörken Foundation.

The connection between stage experience and music education also shapes his teaching. Marvin Frey teaches jazz trumpet at the Landesmusikgymnasium Rheinland-Pfalz, has lectured at the music universities in Freiburg and Stuttgart, and coaches the state youth jazz orchestras of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. As a certified Burba Brass Teacher and Yamaha Artist, he gives workshops on instrumental technique and musical development. In the podcast “MusicLab powered by Yamaha”, he talks with Patrick Hinsberger about practising, creativity and everyday life as a musician.
